Resumo

Ernest Renan published two long papers about Félicité de Lamennais († 1854), a well-known text of 1857, M. de Lamennais (Revue des deux mondes), and an almost forgotten work of 1858, the notice LA MENNAIS F. de in the 2nd edition of the Biographie universelle… called the Michaud. Both writings are very different and their audience is not the same. The 1858 notice is a circumstantial biography and its main object is to dismiss the catholic clergy. The 1857 paper depicts a person. Renan admires the poetic genius and the brave rebelliousness, hates the political attitude, censures the stiffness and reduces the importance of the man. His unconfessed motive is to mark the difference between himself and the other famous unfrocked. The commentaries on the Church are sometimes unfair, sometimes insightful.
