Resumo

19th-century scientists did not hide their pride in having proved that nature could be reduced to matter and motion. As for example Emil du Bois-Reymond put it, to understand nature means: to refer all changes in the corporeal world to the movements of atoms, produced by their central forces independently of time; else, to explain the processes of nature in terms of the mechanics of atoms.1
