ResumoCircumscribed dermal melanoses are caused by either the presence of melanocytes in the dermis or the presence of melanin free in the dermis or within dermal melanophages. Some dermal melanoses are congenital or nevoid and others are acquired. Congenital or nevoid melanoses include Mongolian spots, blue nevus, nevus cell nevus, nevus of Ota, nevus of Ito, and incontinentia pigmenti (Bloch- Sulzberger syndrome). Acquired melanoses include acquired bilateral nevus of Ota-like macules (Hori), blue macules associated with progressive systemic scleroderma, macular amyloidosis (friction melanosis), Riehl's melanosis (female facial melanosis, pigmented cosmetic melanosis), dermal melasma, erythema dyschromicum perstans (ashy dermatosis, Ramirez) and fixed drug eruption.
