ResumoThe new technologies of biomedical science, developed since the Second World War, range from high-resolution separation techniques, radiochemical tracer methods and radioimmunoassay to cell biology and molecular biology and all these have been applied fruitfully to elucidating the nature and actions of hormones controlling calcium metabolism. The many studies utilizing these applications have spawned a substantial body of knowledge, reviewed here, describing the chemistry, biosynthesis, secretion, metabolism, physiology and mechanism of action of parathyroid hormone and calcitonin. An exhaustive and detailed outline of this field is beyond the intended scope of this volume. We have attempted, however, to provide a good general discussion and enough literature citation to give the reader an understanding of the topic and a base for further study, if so desired.
