Our experience with prosthetic implantation is reviewed as is a brief history of phallic construction, including previously reported efforts at achieving rigidity with prosthetic implantation, autologous material implantation and so forth. We present in detail our current technique of implantation in these 8 patients, who underwent 10 attempts at implantation. In 4 patients infection necessitated removal of the prosthesis (2 have since undergone successful reimplantation). Of the 8 patients in whom implantation was attempted 6 (60%) currently have prostheses in place. © 1994 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByZhao Y, Zhang J, Yu M and Long D (2018) Functional Restoration of Penis With Partial Defect by Scrotal Skin FlapJournal of Urology, VOL. 182, NO. 5, (2358-2361), Online publication date: 1-Nov-2009.HOEBEKE P, De CUYPERE G, CEULEMANS P and MONSTREY S (2018) Obtaining Rigidity in Total Phalloplasty: Experience With 35 PatientsJournal of Urology, VOL. 169, NO. 1, (221-223), Online publication date: 1-Jan-2003.AMUKELE S, LEE G, STOCK J and HANNA M (2018) 20-Year Experience With Iatrogenic Penile InjuryJournal of Urology, VOL. 170, NO. 4 Part 2, (1691-1694), Online publication date: 1-Oct-2003.SZOSTAK M, PIZZO J and SKLAR G (2018) THE PLUG AND PATCH: A NEW TECHNIQUE FOR REPAIR OF CORPORAL PERFORATION DURING PLACEMENT OF PENILE PROSTHESESJournal of Urology, VOL. 163, NO. 4, (1203-1205), Online publication date: 1-Apr-2000.SMITH C, KRAUS S and BOONE T (2018) MANAGEMENT OF IMPENDING PENILE PROSTHESIS EROSION WITH A POLYTETRAFLUOROETHYLENE DISTAL WIND SOCK GRAFTJournal of Urology, VOL. 160, NO. 6 Part 1, (2037-2040), Online publication date: 1-Dec-1998.YOO J, LEE I and ATALA A (2018) CARTILAGE RODS AS A POTENTIAL MATERIAL FOR PENILE RECONSTRUCTIONJournal of Urology, VOL. 160, NO. 3 Part 2, (1164-1168), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1998.Capelouto C, Orgill D and Loughlin K (2018) COMPLETE PHALLOPLASTY WITH A PRELAMINATED OSTEOCUTANEOUS FIBULA FLAPJournal of Urology, VOL. 158, NO. 6, (2238-2239), Online publication date: 1-Dec-1997.Herschorn S and Ordorica R (2018) Penile Prosthesis Insertion With Corporeal Reconstruction With Synthetic Vascular Graft MaterialJournal of Urology, VOL. 154, NO. 1, (80-84), Online publication date: 1-Jul-1995.
