ResumoThyrotoxicosis and thyroid nodules are extremely common in the general population. The cause of thyrotoxicosis in a significant proportion of patients older than 40 years, especially where iodine deficiency is prevalent, is a toxic adenoma or a toxic multinodular goiter. 16 The development and application of molecular biology tools over the past decade have provided new and exciting insights into the pathogenesis of these common disorders. This review discusses the molecular characterization and theories of thyroid follicular cell autonomy in the context of the clinical epidemiology, diagnostic methods, and treatment options for toxic adenomas and toxic multinodular goiters.
