ResumoA scheme for asymptotic-expansion solution of the equations governing flow of general elasticoviscous fluids through narrow channels between rigid boundaries is given. A dimensionless channel depth is taken as the small expansion parameter. A solution very similar to the classical lubrication approximation of Osbourne Reynolds and which uses only the first viscometric (material) function for a simple fluid is shown to be a valid first approximation, while a method for obtaining higher-order terms is outlined. The difficulties associated with open boundaries are discussed.
