Resumo

Space photography from the Soviet orbital station Salyut-1 is used to identify transport nodes and their zones of influence. The pattern of central places is then tested against the distribution of known service centers. Coincidence between the pattern based on orbital imagery and the known service centers is found to be complete in the case of major local transport nodes, corresponding to rayon seats, but not with respect to lesser transport nodes. Some lesser transport nodes are found to be devoid of an appropriate range of services; conversely, some places with an appropriate set of services are found to have no significance as transport nodes. Although the study area is not identified in the original article, it is evidently the area of Rubtsovsk, a tractor and farm-equipment manufacturing city of southern Siberia, with a population of 150,000.
