ResumoThe plasma cell dyscrasias (table 1–1), which are synonymous with monoclonal gammopathies, are characterized by proliferation of a single clone of plasma cells which produces a homogeneous monoclonal (M) protein. Each monoclonal protein consists of two heavy polypeptide chains of the same class and subclass and two light polypeptide chains of the same type. In contrast, polyclonal immunoglobulins consist of one or more heavy-chain classes and both light-chain types.
