Resumo

The decade from 1961 to 1971 saw a large number of publications on the experience in the management of fractures of the shaft of the femur. After an initial enthusiasm for open reduction and internal fixation, the trend has been towards more conservative but less confining technics of handling the problem, culminating in the development of the cast brace ambulatory treatment for fractures of the lower extremity. In part I of this communication, the pertinent literature on this subject during the past decade is reviewed; in part II, the senior author's personal experience in the treatment of fractures of the femur in seventy-five patients using a cast brace technic developed by him has been detailed.
