CHARACTERSLATEROA beer alcoholic. A veteran haunted by the ghost of his past. A natural leader. A visionary.THE CHAMPA coke snorter. He tends to speak after the nose sniffle sound. Speaks with an addict's diction. He is an ex-boxer and carries that stance. Ready to pounce at a moments notice.REVEREND SIDEWALKAn excommunicated minister. He is an alcoholic and an adulterer. Searching for redemption.THE BRAINA well-educated heroin addict. Well-read. Takes pill after pill, which he concocts from a laboratory in his high tech carton bed. He never walks (transports himself on a piece of wood on casters or drags himself around). He has an abnormally large cabeza. You could almost see his brain. He is constantly scribbling on pieces of paper.YOUR HIGHNESSEx-madame. A strong woman. She is afflicted with asthma. She has a limp or walking impediment. She uses inhalers which sound like an air pump (sound effect). She carries around a money machine. And a picture of her dead daughter, Pamela, on a huge button on her costume.SUBWAY MISS CANEx-beauty queen. Still in her youth. Strong and proud. Hides a tragic past and because of that she has a nervousness about her. Her hands are constantly in motion making points or tapping beats. She is a chain smoker.NARCO COPAn undercover rogue cop. Mysterious presence. Tough and versatile, a man of many faces. Sharp dresser.All the characters with the exception of Narco Cop are homeless and live in las calles of Spanish Harlem.*Theatrical notes by George ZavalaAct I/Scene 1[MUSICAL OVERTURE TO THE SONG ARE WORKERS! WORKFORCE! SOFT FADE ON EACH CHARACTER AS THEY JOIN THE SONG. THE SIX HOMELESS CHARACTERS ARE SEEN INDIVIDUALLY PICKING UP CANS AND GOING THROUGH TRASH AT NIGHT. EL NARCO COP IS ALMOST ALWAYS IN LAS SOMBRAS, OBSERVANDO. NIGHTTIME IMAGES OF DESERTED EAST HARLEM STREETS ARE PROJECTED ON THE SCREEN, JUXTAPOSED WITH IMAGES OF NYC HOMELESS PEOPLE.]Song #1 WE ARE WORKERS WORKFORCECASTWe are workers!
