The main venous drainage of the corpora cavernosa is via the cavernous veins, with additional drainage through the circumflex, deep dorsal, and crural veins. The arterial supply of the cavernous bodies varied remarkably, and the incidence of an accessory internal pudendal artery was high. The cavernous nerves, previously believed to be microscopic structures, were in fact identifiable grossly, and we were able to follow them from the region of the hilum of the penis to the prostate. The nature of these nerves was then confirmed by serial histologic sectioning. This detailed knowledge of the venous drainage and arterial and nervous supply of the penis, as well as of the relationships among the cavernous structures in the hilum of the penis, can elucidate the cause of erectile dysfunction and provide a valuable guide for surgical correction of vasculogenic and neurogenic impotence. © 1989 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByBenz K, Dunn E, Maruf M, Facciola J, Jayman J, Kasprenski M, Michaud J, Di Carlo H and Gearhart J (2018) Novel Anatomical Observations of the Prostate, Prostatic Vasculature and Penile Vasculature in Classic Bladder Exstrophy Using Magnetic Resonance ImagingJournal of Urology, VOL. 200, NO. 6, (1354-1361), Online publication date: 1-Dec-2018.Henry B, Pękala P, Vikse J, Sanna B, Skinningsrud B, Saganiak K, Walocha J and Tomaszewski K (2018) Variations in the Arterial Blood Supply to the Penis and the Accessory Pudendal Artery: A Meta-Analysis and Review of Implications in Radical ProstatectomyJournal of Urology, VOL. 198, NO. 2, (345-353), Online publication date: 1-Aug-2017.Mulhall J, Secin F and Guillonneau B (2018) Artery Sparing Radical Prostatectomy—Myth or Reality?Journal of Urology, VOL. 179, NO. 3, (827-831), Online publication date: 1-Mar-2008.Nehra A, Kumar R, Ramakumar S, Myers R, Blute M and McKusick M (2018) Pharmacoangiographic Evidence of the Presence and Anatomical Dominance of Accessory Pudendal Artery(s)Journal of Urology, VOL. 179, NO. 6, (2317-2320), Online publication date: 1-Jun-2008.Poppas D, Hochsztein A, Baergen R, Loyd E, Chen J and Felsen D (2007) Nerve Sparing Ventral Clitoroplasty Preserves Dorsal Nerves in Congenital Adrenal HyperplasiaJournal of Urology, VOL. 178, NO. 4S, (1802-1806), Online publication date: 1-Oct-2007.SECIN F, KARANIKOLAS N, TOUIJER A, SALAMANCA J, VICKERS A and GUILLONNEAU B (2018) ANATOMY OF ACCESSORY PUDENDAL ARTERIES IN LAPAROSCOPIC RADICAL PROSTATECTOMYJournal of Urology, VOL. 174, NO. 2, (523-526), Online publication date: 1-Aug-2005.MENON M, KAUL S, BHANDARI A, SHRIVASTAVA A, TEWARI A and HEMAL A (2018) POTENCY FOLLOWING ROBOTIC RADICAL PROSTATECTOMY: A QUESTIONNAIRE BASED ANALYSIS OF OUTCOMES AFTER CONVENTIONAL NERVE SPARING AND PROSTATIC FASCIA SPARING TECHNIQUESJournal of Urology, VOL. 174, NO. 6, (2291-2296), Online publication date: 1-Dec-2005.HUSMANN D and GEARHART J (2018) LOSS OF THE PENILE GLANS AND/OR CORPORA FOLLOWING PRIMARY REPAIR OF BLADDER EXSTROPHY USING THE COMPLETE PENILE DISASSEMBLY TECHNIQUEJournal of Urology, VOL. 172, NO. 4 Part 2, (1696-1701), Online publication date: 1-Oct-2004.MULHALL J, SLOVICK R, HOTALING J, AVIV N, VALENZUELA R, WATERS W and FLANIGAN R (2018) ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION AFTER RADICAL PROSTATECTOMY: HEMODYNAMIC PROFILES AND THEIR CORRELATION WITH THE RECOVERY OF ERECTILE FUNCTIONJournal of Urology, VOL. 167, NO. 3, (1371-1375), Online publication date: 1-Mar-2002.
