Environmental Sustainability and Education

A reforma agraria no Brasil vem sendo discutida ha mais de quarenta anos. A partir da Nova Republica surge o Movimento dos Trabalhadores Sem-Terra, o MST e, com ele, maior organizacao dos trabalhadores rurais e urbanos e a ampliacao do numero de ocupacoes de terras ociosas. A ocupacao, a resistencia e a producao exigem convivio coletivo. Portanto, e um processo educativo. Este artigo apresenta dois temas: o trabalho coletivo e o uso de tecnologias, sobre os quais se aglutinam diferentes representacoes dos agricultores assentados da Fazenda Ipanema, em Ipero, Estado de Sao Paulo. O conhecimento destas representacoes indica caminhos para projetos de educacao ambiental que se proponham tanto a fortalecer a autonomia e a participacao social, quanto a busca de modelos agrossilvopastoris alternativos e mais sustentaveis. ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN RURAL SETTLEMENTS: CONTRIBUTIONS OF A SOCIAL REPRESENTATION CASE STUDY ABSTRACT Agrarian reform in Brazil has been discussed for more than forty years. Since the New Republic, the Movement for Landless Workers has appeared with a resulting better organization of both urban and rural workers and an increase in the occupation of unproductive lands. Occupation, resistance and production processes call for education. This paper presents two themes: collective work and use of technology. Aroun both themes, different representations of farmers are settled on the Farm Ipanema, Ipero County in the State of Sao Paulo. Knowledge gained has indicated the paths for environmental education projects aiming at strengthening autonomy and social participation in the search for alternative agrosilvopastoral models which may prove to be more sustainable.
