Plant Growth Enhancement Techniques

Resumo

Radish has a fairly short growing season, and it is a cold resistant long-day plant. Such biological features are similar to those of leaf vegetables and enable growing radish indoors almost year-round providing some certain requirements are met. The research purpose was a comparative evaluation of radish varieties and hybrids when grown in winter greenhouses in hydroponic shelf systems by deep water culture technique. The research revealed that the studied radish accessions had a different growth dynamics of rosette and roots when grown in winter months in hydroponic systems by deep water culture technique. The fastest rates of root formation were revealed by the Donar hybrid and the Korsar and Kamelot varieties. The earliest industrial ripeness of the root (diameter ≥ 1.5 cm) was observed in 19 days after seedling emergence in the Donar hybrid, which was 3-8 days earlier compared to other varieties. The Kayman variety revealed an intensive rosette growth along with a low root development and an extended period of marketable ripeness attainment, which makes it poorly suitable for winter months’ cultivation. In general, in the evaluation of radish accessions for their compliance with the requirements of growing in winter greenhouses by a container technique in hydroponic systems, the Donar hybrid should be pointed out; that hybrid not only forms marketable roots earlier, but also has the best ratio of the root weight to the rosette weight.
