Resumo

Foals acquire Parascaris equorum infections at an early age. Larval migration through the liver and lungs causes coughing and a nasal discharge, followed by depression and unthriftiness as the worms mature in the small intestine. Some foals die of intestinal impaction or rupture. Immunity develops around 6 to 12 months of age and the ascarid burden diminishes. To prevent the development of a large mass of ascarids in the intestine and the subsequent environmental contamination by massive numbers of eggs, foals should be treated every 6 weeks with a suitable anthelmintic.
