ResumoCretaceous rocks in Minas Gerais are found in two distinct areas related to the Parana and Sao Francisco basins, which since the early part of the Period have been established as autonomous tectonic units. The watershed must correspond to the actual Paranaiba region, which since the Precambrian time originated a structural high named Anteclise do Alto Paranaiba. In the Sao Francisco basin the Cretaceous sequence includes the Areado and Mata da Corda Formations. The Areado is composed of three facies: Abaete, Quirico and Tres Barras. The Mata da Corda comprises the Patos, Capacete and Urucuia facies. The Cretaceous sequence confined to the Triângulo Mineiro is related to the Parana basin, where the Sao Bento Group and Bauru Formation are recognized. The Sao Bento comprises the same units defined in the southern part of the country: Serra Geral Basalts and Botucatu Sandstone. The Bauru Formation, besides the Itaqueri and Marilia Facies, defined in the State of Sao Paulo, includes a third facies named Uberaba.
