The purpose of this chapter is to discuss how TEX interfaces with "the rest of the world." I discuss the various versions of the TEX program, what METAFONT is and how it works together with TEX. You will also find a discussion of the WEB programming system that was used to develop TEX and METAFONT. We will also discuss those problems that occur in the production of documents that TEX does not solve conveniently. At the end of this Chapter you find an overview of all TEX-related file extensions.
