ResumoIt shows characteristics of a elementary school established in the first republican period of Brazil, by iconographic analyze of the Grupo Escolar Cel. Silvino Bezerra founded in 1927, in Vila das Flores (today Florânia) in Rio Grande do Norte. It links the construction of the scholar building to the local elites ideology of modernity in that time. It writes about the change of the mestre-escola to the teacher formed by Escola Normal also established in this same period, in the potiguar country. It concludes about the myth of republican school and the exclusion of majority to leaning even considering the divulgated speech of the necessity of education to form the republican citizen.
