ResumoTo begin with I will quote from the introduction of Simmonds' classic work on “Evolution of crop plants” (1976): “I wondered whether to write a general introductory essay on the subject of crop evolution but decided against doing so. In this field, there is, I think, already perhaps too much generalization from too few examples”. Now, nearly 10 years later, the situation has not changed very much for my opinion: More or less sufficient basic data on evolutionary history are known for at most 200 species of the nearly 5000 cultivated plant species of the world (Schultze-Motel 1986)* , only 40 to 50 of them had been ± regularly introduced into the general discussions on our topic. Therefore I prefer to report at the beginning some case-studies of less well known cultivated taxa which are familiar to me and will try only afterwards to draw cautiously some general conclusions. The selected examples are taken from different crop types, they represent taxa reproduced by seeds (seed-culture, Harris 1969) and cultivated either for the seeds themselves or for other plant parts.
