Fast atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectrometry involves the dissolution of the sample in a liquid matrix, and the bombardment of the sample surface with energetic primary particles. A small fraction of the sample is sputtered as secondary ions, and another fraction is damaged by the irradiation. Since FAB experiments persist for extended periods, during the analysis the sample will have ample time to react with the matrix itself, with matrix impurities, and with reactive species formed during irradiation. A liquid matrix can actually trap and concentrate these reactive intermediates, making the resultant spectral complication almost inevitable.
