Resumo

I. ABSTRACT Plants containing photosensitizing furocoumarins have been used by man for more than 3000 years in the treatment of certain skin disorders. This review considers the past and current uses of furocoumarins in medicine, their occurrence and distribution in plants, mode of photosensitizing action, and toxicological properties, with particular emphasis on their phototoxicity to livestock and poultry. Although only a few furocoumarin-containing plants have been implicated as photosensitizers of domestic animals, furocoumarins occur in a large number of plant species in several families, and it is likely that these compounds are involved in a significant number of the photosensitization cases observed in domestic animals.
