While 54 patients were still using clean intermittent catheterization 9 had discontinued its use and 2 were lost to followup. Complete urologic followup records were available for 28 long-term clean intermittent catheterization users, with an average followup of 3.7 years. Complications seen in this group included nephrolithiasis—3 cases, cystolithiasis—3, epididymitis—4 and urinary tract infection—12. No patient had hydronephrosis or radiographic pyelonephritis. Clean intermittent catheterization appears to be a safe and satisfactory alternative for long-term management of the neurogenic bladder of selected spinal cord injury patients, since the incidence of serious renal complications is low. Factors that should be considered before long-term clean intermittent catheterization is recommended include type of neurogenic bladder, prognosis for recovery, incontinence despite medication, history of urethral trauma, host resistance, physical independence in self-catheterization, compliance and patient preference. © 1982 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByPan D, Troy A, Rogerson J, Bolton D, Brown D and Lawrentschuk N (2018) Long-Term Outcomes of External Sphincterotomy in a Spinal Injured PopulationJournal of Urology, VOL. 181, NO. 2, (705-709), Online publication date: 1-Feb-2009.WELD K and DMOCHOWSKI R (2018) EFFECT OF BLADDER MANAGEMENT ON UROLOGICAL COMPLICATIONS IN SPINAL CORD INJURED PATIENTSJournal of Urology, VOL. 163, NO. 3, (768-772), Online publication date: 1-Mar-2000.Bennett C, Young M, Adkins R and Diaz F (2018) Comparison of Bladder Management Complication Outcomes in Female Spinal Cord Injury PatientsJournal of Urology, VOL. 153, NO. 5, (1458-1460), Online publication date: 1-May-1995.Perkash I and Giroux J (2018) Clean Intermittent Catheterization in Spinal Cord Injury Patients: A Followup StudyJournal of Urology, VOL. 149, NO. 5 Part 1, (1068-1071), Online publication date: 1-May-1993.Lloyd K, Kuhlemeier K, Fine P and Stover S (2018) Initial Bladder Management in Spinal Cord Injury: Does it Make A Difference?Journal of Urology, VOL. 135, NO. 3, (523-527), Online publication date: 1-Mar-1986.Barnett M, Bruskewitz R, Glass N, Sollinger H, Uehling D and Belzer F (2018) Long-term Clean Intermittent Self-catheterization in Renal Transplant RecipientsJournal of Urology, VOL. 134, NO. 4, (654-657), Online publication date: 1-Oct-1985.Maynard F and Diokno A (2018) Urinary Infection and Complications During Clean Intermittent Catheterization Following Spinal Cord InjuryJournal of Urology, VOL. 132, NO. 5, (943-946), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1984.
