This unusual case raises the question of the ultimate fate of intravesically instilled BCG and the possible persistence of these mycobacteria in remote organs. Systemic spread and dormant survival at least in some cases are suggested, and therapeutic and diagnostic consequences are discussed. © 1992 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByDUREK C, RICHTER E, BASTECK A, RÜSCH-GERDES S, GERDES J, JOCHAM D and BÖHLE A (2018) THE FATE OF BACILLUS CALMETTE-GUERIN AFTER INTRAVESICAL INSTILLATIONJournal of Urology, VOL. 165, NO. 5, (1765-1768), Online publication date: 1-May-2001.KIM J and STEINBERG G (2018) THE LIMITS OF BACILLUS CALMETTE-GUERIN FOR CARCINOMA IN SITU OF THE BLADDERJournal of Urology, VOL. 165, NO. 3, (745-756), Online publication date: 1-Mar-2001.Soloway M (2018) Editorial: Intravesical Therapy for Bladder CancerJournal of Urology, VOL. 152, NO. 2 Part 1, (379-381), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1994.Izes J, Bihrle W and Thomas C (2018) Corticosteroid-Associated Fatal Mycobacterial Sepsis Occurring 3 Years after Instillation of Intravesical Bacillus Calmette-GuerinJournal of Urology, VOL. 150, NO. 5 Part 1, (1498-1500), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1993.
