Resumo

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour (MPNST) is the term presently preferred to either malignant schwannoma or neurofibrosarcoma because many sarcomas of nerve sheath bear no reproducible morphological relationship to conventional benign schwannomas or neurofibromas and their constituent cells are typically heterogeneous: in other words, tumour cells in these lesions usually show variable degrees of Schwann cell, perineural and fibroblastic differentiation and hence it is generally impossible to impute a single cell of origin. Therefore the term MPNST more accurately reflects the cellular composition of these neoplasms.
