Resumo

The hydrocephalus determines for the family and the child a chronic situation to be faced, where there is the need to adapt to roles and try to meet the demands originated in this process. This research aimed to understand the family experience of living with the situation of a child with hydrocephalus, when sought to identify what changes the disease caused in family life and which coping mechanisms the family use and/or used. Six families of children with hydrocephalus in countryside of São Paulo state were interviewed. The benchmark methodology used was the Theory Based on Data, based on the theoretical framework of Symbolic Interactionism. The analytical process, led to the axial coding, allowed to characterize elements of family functioning, and was structured into six categories: suffering from the presence of hydrocephalus in child, seeking hope, conceiving a child as a person, the difficulty of living with the child's hydrocephalus, loving the child and getting over with the unpredictability of the future. The results provide evidences that can be incorporated into the care of these families, and signals the need to expand scientific exploration in the context of having a child with hydrocephalus.
