ResumoSUMMARY Digital computers have made possible the solution of mathematical problems once considered intractable. The excellent mathematical software available constitutes a formidable tool for the engineer. Nevertheless, its exclusive use regardless of the size of the problem, causses loss of analytical skills and diminishes the problem solving capability. An adequate approach to problem solving must be based on understanding and modelling the real problem. For this it is fundamental the correct formulation of boundary value problems, initial value problems and eigenvalues problems. In this work, it is shown the construction and application of an adequate functional that yields the mathematical model which describes the dynamical behaviour of Timoshenko beams with general boundary conditions. Also, Rayleigh-Ritz method is applied in a particular case.
