It is shown here that the deepening from the Japan trench to the Izu·Bonin trench at the TTT triple junction cannot be explained by the above two factors, but is explained by the retreating motion of the Philippine Sea plate, one of the two overriding plates, relative to the other, the northeast Honshu plate. The depth change of the Middle America trench at the Cocos-North America Caribbean TTF triple junction might be another example of the same mechanism. Possibilities for explaining the existence of unstable triple junctions, which are discussed briefly, include: tectonic erosion of the non-retreating overriding plate, rifting and thinning of the retreating overriding plate, and lateral accretion of ultramafic rocks supplied from the mantle wedge along the trench side margin of the retreating plate.
