ResumoThe most widely used information storage technologies at present are optic and magnetic technologies. Among the magnetic devises, we have the popular floppy and hard disks, as well as the less known zip, superdisk, syquest, jaz, and others. CDs and DVDs represent the optical supports. The latter, although frequently considered as the more adequate choice for long-term information storage, require special care for their preservation in time. In this paper, the main characteristics of these supports, as well as the materials used for their production, and the harm suffered due to the action of internal and external factors are explained. Some recommendations are made for their long-term conservation.
