Space–Time Behavior Research in China: Recent Development and Future Prospect

Abstract The space–time behavior approach has become an influential methodology in Chinese urban geography. In this article I provide an overview of space–time behavior research in China, focusing on theoretical and methodological progress as well as key themes and findings from recent empirical studies. I argue that space–time behavior research offers a new perspective for understanding the complexity and diversity of human behavior patterns during the large-scale spatial and institutional transition in Chinese cities. Yet although Chinese urban geographers have made more methodological progress in data collection and analytic tools, theoretical development still lags behind compared to the space–time behavior approach in the West. The article concludes by discussing key theoretical and practical challenges for future development of space–time activity research in China. 时空行为方法已在中国城市地理学中成为具有影响力的方法论。在本文中, 我综述了中国的时空行为研究, 聚焦理论与方法论的进程, 以及晚近经验研究中的关键主题与发现。我主张, 时空行为研究提供了在中国城市大规模的空间与制度变迁中, 理解人类行为模式的复杂性与多样性的新视角。儘管中国城市地理学者在资料搜集与分析工具方面展现了诸多的方法论进程, 但在理论发展方面, 与西方的时空行为方法相较之下仍然相对落后。本文以探讨中国未来发展时空活动研究的主要理论及实务挑战做结。 El enfoque conductual del espacio–tiempo se ha convertido en una metodología influyente en la geografía urbana china. En el presente artículo presento una visión generalizada de la investigación sobre comportamiento espacio–temporal en China, enfocando el progreso teórico y metodológico lo mismo que temas claves y hallazgos de estudios empíricos recientes. Sostengo que la investigación sobre comportamiento espacio–temporal facilita una nueva perspectiva para entender la complejidad y diversidad de los patrones de la conducta humana durante la transición espacial e institucional a gran escala en las ciudades chinas. Pero si bien los geógrafos urbanos chinos han hecho un gran progreso metodológico en lo que concierne a recolección de datos y herramientas analíticas, el desarrollo teórico aún se halla retrasado en comparación con lo logrado en el enfoque conductual espacio–temporal de Occidente. El artículo concluye con una discusión de retos teóricos y prácticos claves para el futuro desarrollo de la actividad investigativa relacionada con el espacio–tiempo en China.
