Resumo

O artigo descreve a interacao complexa entre “raca”, nacionalidade e genero nas identidades dos dominicanos e imigrantes haitianos na Republica Dominicana. Atraves de entrevistas com varios imigrantes, a autora mostra que cada um constroi de maneira diferente tanto sua identificacao com o pais hospedeiro quanto com o pais de origem, alem de sua identidade pessoal como haitiano ou haitiana residente no pais vizinho. A autora indica ademais que, mais que alteridades externas, os imigrantes haitianos sao na Republica Dominicana um outro interno, posicao que se fundamenta tambem atraves de um breve exame historico das relacoes entre Haiti e Republica Dominicana. Imigracao Abstract This article describe the complex interaction of “race”, nationality and gender in the identities of Dominicans and Haitian immigrants in the Dominican Republic. Through her interviews with several immigrants, the author shows that each immigrant builds in her own way both her identification with the host country as well as with Haiti. Each of them also builds her own personal identity as a Haitian living in the neighbouring country. Rather than a n external alterity, Haitian immigrants in the Dominican Republic are a n internal other. This fact becomes also clear through a quick perusal of the history of the relations between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Keywords: Haiti. Dominican Republic. Immigration
