The "Ingredients" in Violent Labour Conflict: Patterns in Four Case Studies

THE ARTICLE ENDEAVOURS TO gain some insights into the dynamics of violent labour conflicts, by examining four case studies and highlighting certain factors deemed significant in all four. The cases studied are the Robin Hood flour mill strike of 1977, the Fleck Manufacturing strike in 1978, the Murray Hill conflict in 1969, and the Artistic Woodwork strike of 1973. In examining these conflicts, four aspects were emphasized as important determinants in their outcomes: the organization and relative power of the strikers, the attitude of their adversaries (how they were perceived), the aims that the workers pursued, their style of collective action, and above all the policies and power of the employers and the authorities. In the concluding portion of the paper the interaction between these factors was examined to see how they influenced the outcome of each incident, this as an empirical preliminary to theory building. L'ARTICLE CHERCHE A mettre en relief la dynamique de la violence dans les conflits de travail en etudiant quatre exemples de greves et en relevant des facteurs explicatifs communs a chacune d'entre elles. Les exemples choisis sont la greve a la minoterie Robin Hood en 1977, celle de la Fleck Manufacturing en 1978, le conflit de la Murray Hill en 1969 et la greve de 1973 a la Artistic Woodwork. En etudiant chacun de ces conflits, l'auteur porte attention a quatre elements d'une importance decisive: l'organisation et la force relative des grevistes, l'attitude de leurs adversaires (comment ils etaient percus), les objectifs des travailleurs, leur style de negociation et par dessus tout, les strategies et le pouvoir des employeurs et des autorites. En conclusion, il etudie les relations entre ces facteurs afin de determiner comment ils ont pu influencer le deroulement de chacun des conflits, ce qui est un exercice empirique preliminaire a l'elaboration de theorie.
