En esta ponencia se da cuenta de la cronologia de los ascontecimientos que motivaron la prohibicion de las exportaciones de carne de vacuno y de productos derivados procedentes de Inglaterra, con motivo de la identificacion de una variante de la enfermedad de Ci-cutzfeldt-Jacob en forma de diez casos atipicos hu-manos.Se analiza la forma como pudo surgir la encefalo-patia espongiforme bovina y se presenta la informa-cion existente que sugiere la posible transmision al llorribre de esta enfermedad de] ganado vacuno. Tambien se examinan las medidas de prevencion tomadas en Inglaterra, tanto para luchar contra la en-feririedad en los animales como para reducir al inini-mo su posible transmision al hombre. Se recogen asi-mismo las recomendaciones de los oruanismos internacionales. Finalmente, se hacen algunas reflexicries generales, a modo de ensenanza, que puede sacarse de esta experiencia = In this contribution to a Round Table about «Spon-gifori-n Encephalopaties» held at the Veterinary Facul-ty in Leon (Spain), the chronology of events that de-termined the prohibition of the exports of meat and ineat products from the United Kinodoni due to the identification oi' a variant of the Creutzfeld-Jacob di-sease represented by 10 atypical cases is considered. The ways by which the bovine spongiform encepha-lopaty appeared are analysed and the scarce scientific information available about the possibility of its trans-inition to rrian is presented. Prevention nicasures taken at the United Kingdoin and recommended by international organizations both for reduction of the incidence of the discase in catle and to elirninate any possibility of transinission to man, are also examined. Finally, some reflexions about this experience arealso made.
