Resumo

The objective of this paper was to evaluate the effects of plant population on bulb mass, yield and quality of two onion cultivars. The experiment was carried out in Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, onion producing area in Sao Paulo State, Brazil. A randomized blocks experimental design was used, with four replications, in a factorial 2x4 scheme, being 2 varieties (Optima and Superex) and 4 plant densities (60, 76, 92 and 108 pl. m -2 ). The Superex hybrid presented greater bulb mass (138 g) than Optima hybrid (114 g) and the highest percentage of double bulbs. Lineal reduction of bulb mass was observed with the increment of the plant density. Regarding productivity, there was no significant effect of the evaluated factors. The increase in the number of plants per area promoted lineal increment in the type 1 bulbs production (>15 a 35mm de O), and a lineal reduction in the type 3 bulbs production (>50 to 60mm of diameter) and also double bulbs.
