Resumo

Our main purpose in this paper is to review some aspects concerning the imperial administration of Tiberius Caesar Augustus (14 – 37 A.D) through an interpretation of the political events, as described by Publius Cornelius Tacitus in his Annals. It is essential to emphasize that, contrary to the first impression we get when reading the source, we would argue that this emperor was not neglectful about the diffusion of his political image, neither has he been indifferent to the way his political image was assimilated by the imperial population, both in the City of Rome and in the provinces. This statement is important since it accounts for an underlying need for the development of strategies of authority and legitimacy regarding his government which took place during a period of transition and consolidation of a new political structure. Furthermore, this concern, though absent during the rule of his predecessor, Octavius Augustus, but already noticeable with the dictator Julius Caesar in 49 B.C, was a crucial aspect of his principate, especially if we consider the existence of a historical moment of institution and consolidation of a new form of government that came to supersede another, undermined by a succession of civil dissensions and political strife among factions of the republican aristocracy. Keywords: Tiberius; Tacitus; Principate; Roman Empire; political image.
