Plant Growth Enhancement Techniques

The globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) belongs to the family Compositae and is probably a native of North Africa or southwestern Europe. Its taxonomic position with respect to other related Cynareae, namely C. cardunculus L. and C. siriaca Boiss is debatable. In fact, some authors classify the three above-mentioned Cynareae as different species, others as subspecies of the same species (C. cardunculus L.). Recently Basnizki (1979) has reexamined the problem on the basis of important physiological aspects, and based on the observation that the three species can be crossed with one another giving rise to fertile F1 hybrids, concluded that Cynara scolymus, Cynara cardunculus, and Cynara syriaca should be considered botanical varieties of the same species.
