Para o estudo da frota pesqueira do litoral maranhense, foram realizadas tres viagens de 10 a15 dias para cada area do litoral: Ocidental, Golfao, Oriental (1,2 e 3), entre os anos de 2004 e 2005, com realizacao de entrevistas e observacao in loco . Foram registrados dez tipos de embarcacoes: Cuter, Bote, Bianas, Igarite, Boiao, Casquinho, Catamara, MAR, Lagosteiros e Pargueiros. Alem da descricao das caracteristicas fisicas, foi observado o padrao espacial de distribuicao das categorias nas diferentes regioes do litoral. O numero das embarcacoes tem evoluido ao longo dos anos, totalizando 7.114 atualmente, com predominância para as embarcacoes a remo, seguido daquelas a vela. Atraves da evolucao do tamanho da frota fica evidente o processo de motorizacao da frota atuante na costa maranhense, o que implica em um aumento geral do poder de pesca. Abstract CLASSIFICATION AND EVOLUTION OF MARANHENSE BOATS The description and classification of the fishery fleet of the coast of the Maranhao, were done during 2004 and 2005 in tree trips to the littoral off Maranhao State, Brazil, througth interviews and observations. It has been registered ten types of boats: Cuter, Boat, Bianas, Igarite, Boiao, Canoe, Catamara, MAR, Lobster-Vessel and Red Sapper-Vessel. Spatial pattern of distribution was detected. The total number of the boats has increased throughout years, totalizing 7.114 currently. There is predominance of row-canoe, followed by the sail-boats. The fishery fleet presented evidences of increased motorization, therefore fishery power should be higher. Key works: boats, litoral maranhense, caracterization.
