ResumoA study was designed to assess the use of evaluation of function for comparative studies in rehabilitation. For this purpose, the course of fracture of the hip was compared in rehabilitated and nonrehabilitated patients matched for age, sex, socio-economic status, and prior disability. Deterioration in ambulation was more common in the nonrehabilitated patients. Severe deterioration in activities of daily living was also more frequent in the nonrehabilitated group. The methodologic importance of the study was discussed, namely, its role in demonstrating the utility of measures of function for critical studies of rehabilitative care.
