ResumoThe Mathematical Markup Language (MathML [1]), a standard language for the encoding of mathematical expressions, is going to have a deep impact on a vast community of users, from people interested in publishing scientific documents to researchers who seek new forms of communication and management of mathematical information. In this paper we survey the worlds of LATEX [10],[11], a well-established language for typesetting, and MathML, whose diffusion is promisingly taking o. in these days, with an emphasis on the management of mathematics. We will try to understand how they relate to each other, and why we will still need both in the years to come.
