Resumo

This study aims to identify the criteria of legitimacy in Non-Governmental organizations proposed by Atack (1999) and compare the research results of Marques, Merlo and Nagano (2005). Descriptive research with a qualitative data approach was performed by a multi-case study. The whole of the research was composed of six environmental NGOs and listed in the ECOLISTA and the multi-case study was conducted in two NGOs, selected by accessibility: FloripaAmanha and Ekko Brazil. Data were collected through structured interviews with the principal head of each. In the results analysis, the findings of this survey were compared to the results of Green Tambau NGO and Pau Brasil, analyzed by Marques, Merlo and Nagano (2005). The software UCINET® was used to demonstrate the social network relationships. The survey results showed the presence of the four legitimacy criteria of Atack (1999), known as representativeness, effectiveness, distinction of values and empowerment. Observations made included: a) disclosure of their financial results in a transparent manner, b) provide social benefits where acting, c) enable the empowerment of communities and actions aimed at sustainable development, and d) have strong ties in their network of relationships. It is concluded that, in general, these associations are strongly legitimized by their stakeholders.
