It makes possible a presumptive diagnosis of hemochromatosis. We have recently reviewed methods of evaluating the iron stores.1 Several of these appear to have considerable merit, and it is unfortunate that they have been neglected by most physicians. The most direct method of assessing the iron stores is the examination of fragments of sternal bone marrow for stainable iron. Although on occasion this method may give misleading results, it has been found to be highly...Bibliography1. Beutler E: The clinical evaluation of iron stores, New England J.
