ResumoAntonio Alatorre shows the play of masks that Rulfo used to construct his persona and some attitudes towards criticism. Behind the public image of that character defined by Juan Jose Arreola as sullen, surly, sly, the essayist reveals a profoundly human Rulfo: ''Juan always had the habit of telling lies. I use the word lie without any moral meaning, in the bare and objective some of 'lack of truth'. Juan surrounded himself and his work with all kinds of lies, or let us say, concealings, fictions, fabrications, half truths, silence. Of course, Alatorre's personal contact with the author of Pedro Paramo animates and modulates this portrait.
