ResumoThis chapter focuses on the conceptual basis for recent changes to CENTURY soil organic matter (SOM) model and on the impact of soil texture on SOM dynamics. The CENTURY model simulates the decomposition of both surface and soil litter material. The chapter aims to compare model predictions on the effect of soil texture on total soil carbon (C) levels and turnover rates of C in different pools, short-term dynamics of added plant residue, and loss of soil C due to cultivation with observation. It summarizes the modeling studies of the long-term impact of different crop management practices on soil C and nitrogen stabilization at Pendleton, Oregon, site, Sidney, Nebraska, and in Sweden. The CENTURY model has been extended and extensively modified to better simulate litter chemistry and soil texture effects, these changes and model testing are documented.
