ResumoNorth Americans will find themselves entertained and perplexed upon listening to Bola de Nieve: Here they will find an animated performer of the spoken song, whose work seems to echo Jacques Brell, Mabel Mercer, and Bobby Short, except his languages are Spanish, Catalan, Italian, French, and, oh yes, English. Still, this exciting music will seem elusive. It will not sound like anything they have heard before: It will seem idiosyncratic and attractive. The Spanish will have that racy toll of the Caribbean with its swallowed consonants and African loan words. The songs have that old favorites panache, but somehow contain something extra, a kind of swing that resembles more the salsa of our barrios than Cole Porter. It can be jazzy, too, and elicit the pathos associated with French boilte singing. Who is this husky-voiced, slightly corpulent, waistcoated smiling man called Snowball?
