Este artigo busca, a partir de fontes primarias, jornais diarios e documentos oficiais, tais como: decretos, mensagens e leis, analisar a implantacao dos bondes eletricos na cidade de Manaus em 1896 e a expansao ocorrida ate 1910. Se de um lado, a implantacao de sofisticado servico de transporte, que coincide com o periodo aureo da borracha, significava o sinal da modernizacao numa cidade tropical, de outro assinalava a exclusao de parte significativa da populacao desse servico. Palavras chave : Amazonia, transporte coletivo, bondes. ABSTRACT The article seeks from primary sources, daily papers and oficial documents, such as: decree, messages and rules to analyze the beginning of transportation by trolley in Manaus in 1896, as well as its expansion until 1910. The beginning of sophisticated transportation that took place at rubber boom period, whether means modernization in a tropical town, on the other hand, it emphasizes the exclusion of a significant part of the population.
