ResumoWhat was once called an “accident” is now labeled by researchers as an “unintentional injury” (Robertson, 1983). What was once thought of as a simple twist of fate is now acknowledged as the leading cause of preventable death in children in industrialized nations (Division of Injury Control, 1990). Even further, hundreds of nonfatal injuries occur each year that leave children disfigured, physically and mentally handicapped, emotionally disturbed, and permanently brain damaged (Roberts & Brooks, 1987). Given the serious threat of unintentional injuries to every child in our country, prevention of childhood injuries is a topic of paramount importance for the child behavior therapist.
