The case presented symptomatology not heretofore described in leptospirosis, and increased the number of clinical pictures that suggest the possibility of leptospiral etiology. The leptospiroses are a group of illnesses caused by spirochetes of a number of immunologically distinct strains.Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae, the cause of Weil's disease, andLeptospira canicola, the cause of canicola fever, were comparatively well known in the United States before 1951.
