The 51st Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) was held at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California, January 24–28, 2015. More than 4,600 attended, including surgeons, allied health care professionals, exhibitors, and others. Attendees of the STS Annual Meeting had the opportunity to participate in a variety of dynamic oral and hands-on educational sessions, including Parallel Surgical Symposia, Early Riser Sessions, Surgical Motion Picture Matinees, and STS University. The Monday morning General Session featured three J. Maxwell Chamberlain Memorial Papers: Adult Cardiac Surgery—“Over 3 Decades of Follow-Up Demonstrates Improved Survival With Bilateral vs Single Internal Mammary Artery Grafting in Elderly Patients”; General Thoracic Surgery—“Comparison of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons General Thoracic Surgery Database and the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program in a General Thoracic Surgical Practice”; and Congenital Heart Surgery—“Improving Cardiac Surgical Site Infection Diagnosis, Adjudication, and Reporting by Using Registry Data for Case Ascertainment.” These honored papers were followed by three Richard E. Clark Papers, selected for their research using data from the STS National Database. The presentations were: Adult Cardiac Surgery—“Comparison of Alternative Access Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement Techniques in the US for 6,341 Patients Considered High-Risk or Inoperative for Aortic Valve Replacement and With Severe Aortic Stenosis: An Analysis From the STS/ACC TVT RegistryTM”; General Thoracic Surgery—“The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Composite Score for Lobectomy for Lung Cancer: The First Thoracic Quality Measure for Public Reporting”; and Congenital Heart Surgery—“Characteristics of Patients Undergoing Congenital Heart Surgery Vary Across US Children’s Hospitals and Impact Assessment of Hospital Performance: An Analysis of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Congenital Heart Surgery Database.” The session ended with the Presidential Address, which was given by David A. Fullerton, MD. He highlighted noncommunicable diseases, specifically cardiovascular disease, lung cancer, and esophageal cancer, in the developing world and announced that the Society is launching a new initiative to fund charitable surgical missions in developing nations. In the General Session on Tuesday morning there were three highly motivational presentations: the Thomas B. Ferguson Lecture, the C. Walton Lillehei Lecture, and the Ethics Debate. The Thomas B. Ferguson Lecture was given by Pedro J. del Nido, MD, President of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS). He is Chief of Cardiac Surgery and the William E. Ladd Professor of Child Surgery at Harvard Medical School, Boston. Dr del Nido’s presentation, “Surgical Innovation: Lessons From the Pragmatic Philosophical School,” provided insight on how pragmatism, as defined by the Pragmatic Philosophical School, has enabled the development of innovative and, at times, radically new solutions and treatments for cardiothoracic diseases. The C. Walton Lillehei Lecture was presented by Patrick T. O’Gara, MD, President of the American College of Cardiology (ACC). He serves as Director of Clinical Cardiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston. Dr O’Gara’s presentation, “Clinical Trials at the Interface of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery—What Would Dr Lillehei Think?,” focused on where cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons are headed as a team. In the Ethics Debate, “Must Surgeons in Training Programs Allow Residents to Operate on Their Patients to Satisfy Board Requirements?,” two experts gave opposing answers to this dilemma and then engaged audience members in the debate. The Annual Meeting also featured collaborative educational efforts with other professional medical organizations, including AATS (STS/AATS Tech-Con 2015 and the STS/AATS Critical Care Symposium); the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (STS/SCA: The Utility of Perioperative Echocardiography for Surgical Decision Making); American College of Chest Physicians (STS/CHEST Primer on Advanced and Therapeutic Bronchoscopy: Theory and Hands-on Session); ACC (ACC @ STS); the Joint Council on Thoracic Surgery Education/STS Workforce on International Relationships (Globalization of Graduate Surgical Education in Cardiothoracic Surgery); the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (STS/EACTS: Management of the Aortic Arch in Aortic Dissection); the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS @ STS); the Canadian Association of Thoracic Surgeons and the Canadian Society of Cardiac Surgeons (STS/CATS/CSCS: Current and Future Workforce Issues in Cardiothoracic Surgery–Staff and Resident Perspectives From Canada and the US); and the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS @ STS: Controversial Issues in General Thoracic Surgery—Perspectives From Europe and North America). STS University wrapped up the STS 51st Annual Meeting. Approximately 550 people registered for 10 sessions. This year’s sessions ranged from a hands-on course on valve-sparing aortic root replacement to advanced esophageal and tracheal procedures. STS University provided an opportunity for registrants to learn the latest cardiothoracic surgery techniques through hands-on procedural education taught by world-renowned instructors. Before the STS 51st Annual Meeting, STS/AATS Tech-Con 2015 welcomed more than 1,000 attendees and exhibitors. The program encompassed new technologies and emerging trends. The Joint Session covered barriers and/or pathways for adoption of new technology, with perspectives from surgeons, the US Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, industry, and hospital administration. The cardiac and thoracic tracks covered mitral valve, atrial fibrillation, left atrial appendage, novel thoracoscopic techniques and tools, new developments in management of lung tumors, coronary artery disease, and 3D printers for surgical planning. These tracks included invited lectures as well as many debates on topics such as “Most Patients Should Have a Biologic Aortic Valve Since Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) Valve-in-Valve Is Available” and “The LAA Should Always Be Eliminated During Open Cardiac Surgery.” Once again, the Society is offering Annual Meeting Online products so that physicians can experience the dynamic educational offerings and earn Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit from the comfort of their home or office. STS 51st Annual Meeting Online includes the majority of sessions from the live conference, including the Surgical Symposia, General Sessions, Parallel Surgical Forums, Surgical Motion Pictures, and the Ethics Debate. STS/AATS Tech-Con 2015 Online includes all of the educational tracks offered in San Diego during Tech-Con. Up to 117.50 CME credits are available when both products are purchased. These activities will be available for CME credit until January 31, 2016. For more information, visit www.sts.org/amonline. The success of the STS 51st Annual Meeting was due in large part to the exemplary commitment of the Workforce on Annual Meeting under the leadership of Joseph C. Cleveland, Jr, MD (Workforce Chair), James R. Edgerton, MD (STS University Task Force Chair), Christopher A. Caldarone, MD (Surgical Symposia Task Force Co-Chair), Jules Lin, MD (Surgical Symposia Task Force Co-Chair), K. Robert Shen, MD (Tech-Con Task Force Co-Chair), and Vinod H. Thourani, MD (Tech-Con Task Force Co-Chair). New STS officers and directors were elected during the Annual Membership (Business) Meeting on Monday, January 26. Mark S. Allen, MD, was elected STS President for 2015–2016, Joseph E. Bavaria, MD, was elected First Vice President, and Richard L. Prager, MD, was elected Second Vice President. G. Alexander Patterson, MD, was elected Editor of The Annals, Damien J. LaPar, MD, MS, was elected Resident Director, and Vinod H. Thourani, MD, was elected Director-at-Large. Reelected to their current positions were Secretary Keith S. Naunheim, MD, Treasurer Robert S. D. Higgins, MD, MSHA, and Director-at-Large Cameron D. Wright, MD. Complete rosters of the STS Board of Directors, Standing Committees, Council Operating Boards, Workforces, Annual Meeting task forces, and The Annals Editorial Board follow this report. The Society extends its appreciation to retiring STS Officers, Directors, Standing Committee members, and Workforce members for their dedicated service. STS voting members elected 149 Active Members and 128 International Members this year. During 2014, 105 Candidate Members, 82 Associate Members, and 80 Precandidate Members also became members as part of the rolling admissions process. The Society now has more than 7,000 members. The Society would like to thank the many member volunteers and their supportive families for their commitment to the specialty, as well as for the hard work and long hours they put in to develop and implement this highly successful meeting. The STS 52nd Annual Meeting will be held January 23–27, 2016, in Phoenix, Arizona. Mark S. Allen, Rochester, MN Joseph E. Bavaria, Philadelphia, PA Richard L. Prager, Ann Arbor, MI Keith S.
