Resumo

Abstract Over eighty-five enterprises and scientific research organizations of Russia's military scientific-industrial complex (MSIC) are located in Siberia, approximately 80 percent of them in Western Siberia. Enterprises in the machine-building, instrument-making, radioelectronics, aviation, nuclear, and chemical industries comprise the basic nucleus. They determine the complex's specialization in the production of science-intensive products. Additionally, in Siberian cities where defense enterprises are located, there are branch and academic scientific-research and design-technological organizations working on defense problems. The cities of Tomsk, Novosibirsk, Omsk, and Barnaul in Western Siberia and Krasnoiarsk, Irkutsk, and Chita in Eastern Siberia are the largest centers of concentration of defense enterprises. Almost 70 percent of the Siberian MSIC's work force works in Novosibirsk, Omsk, and Krasnoiarsk. Tomsk and Krasnoiarsk have satellite cities around which large nuclear industry enterprises have formed (Table 1, and Figures 1 and 2).
