ResumoPlay is recognized as a practice that has close relations with the sociocultural context in which it manifests. This study aimed to analyze the relationships between play and culture through the aspects of Interpretative Reproduction and peer culture present in the street playing episodes observed among groups of children and young of the Ilha dos Frades island, not urban fishing community in Salvador - BA. This was a descriptive study, whose data collection procedure was the naturalistic observation of behavior. Data were analyzed qualitatively from empirical categories. The results indicate the presence of elements of Interpretative Reproduction and Peer Culture in play, such as local theme of the sailor , worship Yemanja and presence of ridicule in the play. We discuss how these elements provide the child’s participation in the construction of the larger culture through play.
