In the light of the encyclical Ecclesia de Eucharistia by Pope John Paul II, the author of this text studies the ritual character of the liturgical celebration. After stating the profound cultural dimension of the rite, the author questions whether a phenomenological approach is sufficient to understand the profound nature of the liturgical celebration or if it transcends all possible anthropological interpretations. The writer concludes by affirming that, in spite of everything, attention to the rite becomes a determining factor not only for an adequate understanding of the liturgy but also for formulating correct theology since its elemental character is the actualisation of the salvific mystery.
